What is pagination you might ask? It’s simple it’s a way for readers to jump page to page or post to post.
It’s the numbers at the bottom of a page you know 123 and so on.
You want your readers to find your post or pages easily pagination numbers are the best pagination.
If you have the dreaded next and previous keep reading.
If you have the infinite scroll definately keep reading.
Don’t let your readers get lost give them a pagination they deserve.
Hi spice of life fans welcome to ”How to do a manual backup and restore of your wordpress website”
Here are some questions that you will learn the answers to.
Why is it so important to do a manual backup and restore of your wordpress website?
Can’t you just rely on your hosting companies automatic backups of your website?
If you are relying on your hosting companies backup system is your files just being backed up or is it both your files and database?
Is it important to just have a backup of your files or do you also need a backup of your database?
Can’t you just rely on a plugin to do this for you?
I will answer all of these questions for you I will also explain to you why doing a manuel backup and restore of your wordpress website is the most secure thing you can do.
You need a cpanel hosting account it is important.
Before I answer these questions I would like to state in order to do a manual backup and restore of your wordpress website you need to be on a cpanel hosting account.
What in the world is cpanel? It’s a website owners command center as I like to call it is similar to under the hood of your car if you have a problem and cannot access your wordpress website you should be able to acess cpanel and be able to fix the problem.
As a website owner you have the ability to control various aspects of your website.
Cpanel and your car are similar in a lot of ways if you can’t pop the hood and look at the engine of your car how are you going to fix the problem to get your car running again. Exactly you can’t.
The same thing is true for your website think of cpanel as the engine of your car if you can’t pop the hood of your website how are you going to get your website back up and runnning if it crashes?
You can still acess your website by FTP however this is a harder way to do things in my opioion there are less toutrials online using FTP and it’s not as advanced as cpanel.
Please listen to what I am saying trust me this cpanel thing is more important than you even realize it is.
Why is it so important to do a manual backup and restore of your website?
Because your website is your buissness you make a living off of.
Because you spend hours and hours designing, writing, advertsing, building a auidence, building your brand.
Because your website or blog became a small hobby and turned into a real online buissness it went from nothing into something and you care about it.
Im not writing this to scare anyone I’m writing this to inform and teach others.
Would you be ok if you lost everything? Would it be difficult for you to start over from scratch?
It can unfortunately happen to anyone sometimes there are bad people in the world who will try to hack your website; there are some crappy plugins out there that will break your website.
Sometimes in life there will be a few roadblocks and instead of being worried or afraid you will lose everything; you need to how to instead be educated in case of a problem comes your way.
Some popular ebooks I recommend are.
Can’t I just rely on my hosting companies backups?
Ask yourself these questions.
Are you comfortable allowing your hosting company to have your website in their hands?
Will your hosting company always be there for you? Would they spend hours and hours fixing your website if it crashed or got hacked?
Or would your hosting company tell you there is nothing they can do you are on your own and advise you to start over from scratch?
I would personally not recommend anyone relying on there hosting company.
It’s a hard truth but you really don’t need to rely on your hosting company in life you can only rely on yourself.
You might be saying right now that you have the best hosting company in the world. If you do Im glad for you.
( However not everyone is so lucky ).
I’m not here to bad mouth my hosting company or reveal who my hosting company is for my own security reasons.
I’m not hear to whine or complain I’m here to educate and inform.
Please don’t rely on your hosting companies backups sometimes there backup system just might not work in my sistuation this happened to me.
On my hosting companies end there backup system wouldn’t work they asked me if I myself had a backup of my website from the last 30 days that my files and databade had become corrupted.
This really made me scratch my head how did my hosting company expect me to have a backup of my website knowing I did not have a cpanel.
Please listen to what Im telling you don’t rely on your hosting company even if there the best sometimes in life you might be faced with some hard road blocks that you might need to be able to fix yourself.
If you are relying on your hosting companies backups is your files being backed up or is it both your files and database?
On my hosting companies backups they had the option to backup just your files or just your database.
After the problems I faced I believe you need a backup of both your files and database and both should be the same date.
You cannot have one without the other.
What is files on wordpress.
Your content you wrote that you worked hard on. Your stylesheet you know css. Any customizations you made to your website. Your theme. Your plugins. All of these things are important and go into your file manager.
What is your database?
Software to store data collected into tables.
Both your files and database are extermely important and make up your website.
Is it important to just have a backup of your files or do you also need a backup of your database?
You defintely need both they are both equally important.
Can’t you just rely on a plugin to do this for you?
I don’t suggest you rely on a plugin to do a backup and restore of your website.
In my personal opionion plugins aren’t very reliable and might not do the full job.
What is the best way to do a backup of your websitie?
So what is the best way to do a backup and restore of your website?
We already marked off relying on our hosting company and we marked off using plugins so what else is there?
It’s called doing a manuel backup of your websitie you need to know how to both do a full manuel and backup of your websitie.
You need to know how to backup both your database and files.
Don’t worry it’s not scary it’s actually not that bad if I can do it so can you.
Please follow my advice and follow this blogging toutrial all the way through.
Take my advice I know what I’m talking about I had a year old blog with a great amount of content on in it;and bam thank you mame everything I worked hard on was gone.
Before we get started a great idea would be putting all of your backups of your database and files on a flash drive because you never know teqnology sometimes fails us your computer might unfortunately crash.
If you have a flash drive with your database and files you are secure.
I have 2 youtube video’s to show you first and then I will give you complete directions on how to do; a manual backup of your database and files and a restore of your websitie.
Here are two videos I highly recommend to watch this is how I learned how to do a manual backup of my database and files and a restore of my wordpress website.
This really works from my own personal experience this is how I personally do a manual backup and restore of my websitie and the restore works like a charm and your websitie will be back up and running.
Let’s give it up to the WPLearningLab – WordPress Tutorials I highly recommend watching his youtube video’s he has tons of wordpress toutrials and new videos all the time. ( Please subscribe to the Wp learning lab ).
Here are the 2 youtube videos
Please watch both video’s closely.
Complete directions on how to do a manual backup of your files.
Here is the complete directions on how I personally manually backup my database and files.
You can take my directions or the wp learning lab.
I am documenting the directions to give you a more detailed idea on how to do a manual backup and restore of your database and files.
First I usually do a manual backup of my files.
Go to cpanel look for file manager open the document root for your website for example mine is Spices of our lives .com click go.
You will see a list of your websities files.
Look at the top and click on select all.
Once everything is highlighted look for compress and click on it. You have the option to choose
Bzipzed tar archive
I recommend using zip archive as it is the most common and easy.
Now you have the choice to name your downloadable file I would recommend using the date.
I always wait to name my file until it is on my computer for some reason if I name the file in the file manager it doesn’t download right hopefully you will have better luck than I.
However you can do what I do and name your folder later if you decide to do this look for the file cig bin zip it looks yellow and in a box.
Click on cig bin zip and download yeah your done and your files of your websitie should be on your computer.
Ok if you followed my exact steps look for the file cig bin zip and rename the file to that days date so you can easily find it if you need it.
So name it file manager and then that days date.
I then put the file I created from file manger and create a folder on my computer I usually call the folder file manager and database and I include the data.
I put the files from my websitie and my database together so I can easily find them later.
( After you have sucessfully downloaded the file from file manager on your computer I highly recommend deleting the downloadable file you created in file manager for security reasons ).
Complete directions on how to do a manual backup of your database.
Go to cpanel and look for databases. Look for php my admin and click on it.
Find your database for example it will look like this i361777 wp3 and by the way this isn’t my database number I just randomly created a number to give you a example.
I cannot give you the exaxt number of my database for a example as it is a security risk.
My advice if you don’t know which one is the database of your website then call your hosting company and they will be glad to tell you.
Once you found the right database click on it and you will see a list of all of your websities tables for example my database has 54 tables.
Go to the bottom and click on select all.
Once everything is highlighted click on the export found at the top.
You have the option to click on Quick display only the minimal options.
Custom display all possible options.
Whichever option you choose make sure it is in the SQL format as this is the easiest option.
For some reason it doesn’t download correctly if I choose quick display on the minimal options hopefully you will have better luck than I.
I personally choose custom display all possible options if you do what I do make sure when you see the box with the word tables on it you click on select all and make sure everything is highlighted.
On the compression click on zipped now your done yeah look for the file on your computer it will have your database number for example i361777 wp3 rename this file to database and use that day’s date.
Now find the folder you created on your computer that you created called files and datbase and place your dtabase zip file you just created inside of the folder.
It is always reommended to keep your files and database together.
I like to take things one step further I like to take notes.
This step is optional however recommended after I created a folder on my computer that I named files and datbase and I put that day’s date on it.
I always take notes what does this mean?
It means I want to know why I created a backup of my files and database for that day.
So what I do is create a word document that I usually name files and database and that day’s date.
I will leave myself a reminder of why I did a backup and restore of my files and database for example I just got done publishing a new post, I just downloaded a new plugin, I had to update my theme, I just got done doing customizations of my websitie, and by doing this it reminds me oh this is what I did on this day.
It is always a good ideas to do a backup and restore on your website if you done a ton of work on it that day and you don’t want to risk losing anything.
Especially after you install a plugin there are sometimes some crappy plugins that can cause you a ton of teqnical problems.
I then put the word document into the folder I created on my computer files and database.
I always put my files and database on a flash drive.
This option is also optional but highly recommend I always then put my files and database on my flash drive just in case my computer crashses.
It sad but true sometimes teqnology can fail us.
I always put my post I publish on a flash drive.
This is also optional you don’t have to be over parnoid like I am and put all of your post on a flash drive.
I truly believe a manul backup and restore really works because I seen it work.
However can you blame me I lost a whole year’s worth of content and am having to start over it sure did make me depressed for a long time.
But I not a quitter I found a soultion doing a manuel backup of my files and database is apart of my blogging routine now.
How often should you do a manual backup and restore?
I suggest doing a manual backup of your files and databse anytime you put in a ton of work for your websitie.
This could include publishing a post that took hours to write.
Spending hours redsigning your websitie.
Eespecially before you download a plugin because some plugins can seriously cause you some teqnical problems.
When do you need to do a restore of your websitie?
Anytime something breaks on your websitie from a plugin.
If you get the white screen of death.
If your websitie is unacessible.
If you get hacked.
It is extremly important to know how to restore from your manual backup you created of your database and files so you can get your website back up and running again.
It is amazing he delets all the files on the website from the file manager and complety removes all the tables from the database and brings the website back up from the manual backup of the database and files.
All you literally have to do is go to your file manger and upload the manual backup you created of your files just your files. And then click on extract. Boom your files are back.
Click on reload and you will see all of your files.
( Once your files are back delete the manual backup of your files for security reasons. )
On your database click on your for example mine is i361777 wp3 well not really but here is a example on what it might look like on your end.
Click on import at the top click on browse find the latest database you want to use from your manual backups of your database.
You should get a sucess message.
Click on structure boom your database is back.
And yeah boom you know how to do a manual backup and restore of your files and database you know now how to restore from your manual backups.
